When we teach Beauty Courses we never leave any stone unturned when it comes to provide tips and skills to our lovely students. We go into every detail so they get the most out of their day. This week at Sydney College of Skin Care, our Diploma of Beauty Therapy students have been learning Swedish full body massage. Massage involves working and acting on the body with pressure. Techniques are commonly applied using hands, fingers, elbows and forearm.

The purpose of massage is generally promoted as treatment for stress or pain. It is easily one of the most popular treatments done in salons and day spas. Each student studying their diploma of beauty therapy are required to learn Swedish massage.

In professional settings massage clients are treated while lying on a massage table. The most widely recognized and commonly used category of massage is the Swedish massage. The Swedish massage techniques vary from light to vigorous. Swedish massage uses five styles of strokes. The five basic strokes are effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, friction and vibrations. Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain, joint pain and most importantly, stress.

There are many different types of massage available including Thai massage, hot stone massage, aromatherapy massage, deep tissue massage, shiatsu massage and the very popular deep tissue massage. During your career as a beauty therapist it is necessary you can perform a Swedish massage which is the most common massage, some students like to specialise in massage and continue on to study remedial massage which is a very popular massage for athlete’s to have in salons. Massage is a skill that you will never forget. Once you know how it is a skill that stays with you

Clinical studies report that Swedish Massage can effectively reduce low back pain and the effectiveness can last for as long as 15 weeks. Typically, a Swedish massage is 1 hour duration, it is important for therapists to concentrate on keeping good posture during the treatment and ware supportive footwear.

How we cure dry dehydrated skin FAST..

By | Education, Health Tips | No Comments

During our Beauty Courses, we put every effort to make our lovely students fully confident in what they are learning and performing. In today’s class was about skin care and topic was dry or dehydrated skin.

During windy days, it’s important to protect your skin from over drying because if it’s left untreated it can lead to severe dehydration which leads to premature wrinkling, and even skin sensitivities. Dehydration means loss of moisture (water) and it can occur in dry skin as well as oily skin types.

If your skin has been dried out by the wind, a moisturizing and hydrating mask can provide instant relief. Prepare your skin first with a gentle milky cleanser designed for sensitive dehydrated skin. After cleansing, patting in a gently hydrating toner is an absolute must. The toner saturates the skin with moisture and often contains soothing plant extracts full of vitamins such as vitamin B5 which helps to re-hydrate and strengthen the skin. Next, use a gentle, creamy or enzyme-based exfoliant to slough off dry dead cells and smooth the skin. Your mask will be able to moisturise deeper if you exfoliate beforehand.

Apply a mask formulated for a dehydrated or sensitive skin. Leave on for 10-15 minutes (some you can leave on overnight). This will restore your skin’s hydration levels, plumping and softening your skin and reinforcing the skin barrier. After washing off the mask, apply a hydrating moisturizer. During windy days look for moisturizers with Hyaluronic acid which is a powerful skin hydrating ingredient.

If your skin is also lipid dry (not enough oil) look for a more emollient cream rich in essential fatty acids. When the skin is lacking lipids, just saturating the skin with moisture is not enough. Your skin is unable to manufacture omegas so if essential acids are depleted it will weaken the skin barrier making it ‘porous’ allowing it to dry out and can lead to flaky and sensitive skin. A lipid (oil) dry skin needs to restore essential fatty acids. Choose serums and creams rich in omega 3, 6, 9 essential fatty acids that will create a barrier on the surface to help prevent moisture loss in a drying environment.

Eating more oily fish can help repair the barrier from the inside out. Flax seed oil is also very rich in essential fatty acids which are great for dry skin. Of course, during sunny and windy days it is especially important to use a sunscreen and opt for sunscreens that have added antioxidants to protect the skin.

So, when the wind picks up, adjust your skin care to keep it moisturized, hydrated and protected and if you need advice, have a professional beauty therapist look at your skin. Even better, book yourself in for a lovely, relaxing hydrating facial for a real boost that will make your skin glow! All our girls at Sydney college of skincare are trained to the highest standard, the CIDESCO standard so why not book in with us and we will look after you.

We proud to run Beauty courses in Sydney for many years and if haven’t yet checked out our courses page, please do it now and ask us if you have any questions.

We can also help you to find out if you are eligible for Government Funded Course.

Dark circles

By | Education, Health Tips | No Comments

While studying at Sydney College of Skin Care, we put a lot of emphasis on facials during your Diploma of Beauty Therapy as Skin Care is one of the largest units in the diploma. One question that gets a lot of attention is dark circles, what causes them and how can I get rid of them. Genetics, bone structure, lymphatic drainage and salt intake can be the contributing factors towards dark circles.

It is often claimed that dark circles are caused by tiredness or working too hard or even just staying up late. While this can be true, the truth is that your genes play a huge role here. So, what exactly is happening when you get dark circles under or around your eyes?

Simply put, dark circles are a result of the thin layer of skin below your eyes showing the blood vessels and the blood they contain more clearly than anywhere else on your body. (this skin around your eyelids, is on average about 0.5 mm thick compared to an average of about 2 mm thick on most of the rest of your body.)

Again, as you may or may not know, as we age, our skin loses its elasticity and ability to regenerate and as a result, it becomes thinner. Therefore, often; elderly people will have rather prominent dark circles regardless of how much they sleep. As with those who are genetically predisposed to having thinner skin below the eyes, it’s just biology.

Unfortunately, there are not many solutions for dark circles. They can be tough to tackle since no one singular cream offers the true solution, and so we must be realistic with our expectations. If the reason is within your control, like if it’s down to your sodium intake or lack of quality hours of sleep at night, then I would consider adjusting that immediately.

We hope you enjoyed this article. We are very proud of the fact that we have taught thousands of students over the number of years and most of them are successfully working in Beauty Industry.

Please check out our courses page and ask any questions to our career advisors. We are here to help and can also find out if you are eligible for Government Funded Course.

“Understanding Congestion when it comes to Beauty”

By | Education, Health Tips | No Comments

When students, studying Diploma of Beauty Therapy with us at Sydney College of Skin Care, begin the facials unit, some questions that frequently get asked are, is my skin congested? Have I break-outs? Have I acne? Am I oily? What is causing it? Let us explain what congestion is and how it forms.

In oil related congestion, the sebum is thick and waxy and has settled deep down in the hair follicle. Usually found around the chin and cheeks, it feels like a cluster of small, deep lumps under the skin. Congestion is usually skin colored, is not painful and does not itch. Once it appears, it usually just sits there and does not clear on its own. The waxy sebum can be a result of poor nutrition, certain food intolerance, a sluggish metabolism, hormones, not drinking enough water, etc. and if left untreated, can potentially lead to ruptured follicles, papules and painful lesions or acne.

To clear it, the waxy sebum must be broken down, liquefied, and allowed to flow freely to the surface.

If congestion occurs around the jawline and cheeks, and occasionally on the neck, then it is either caused by over nourishing products or it’s an internal problem, where the body is eliminating toxins via the skin. Check the products you are using, that they are not too rich. Makeup can sometimes be the problem, and poor quality skin care full of petrochemicals which literally suffocate the skin. If it is not the skin care, it’s internal. The skin is sluggish, the body may be sluggish. You may not be drinking sufficient water, or suffer from constipation or sluggish irregular bowel movements, food intolerance or lack of exercise. If it is a persistent problem, I would refer my client to see a naturopath for a consultation and a detox.

However, there are few things which we can do.

Professional treatment options: after cleansing, use an exfoliant with salicylic acid or enzymes. Salicylic acid is the only hydroxyl that can penetrate into the follicle, get deep down, break down the waxy sebum, and exfoliate the follicle from inside out. Exfoliants containing enzymes digest and break down the waxy sebum and hard keratin plugging up the follicle.

Desincrustation with the galvanic machine is an excellent add on option to treat congestion and one we study in depth at our college. The galvanic current draws the specialised ampoule (serum) deep into the follicle, and breaks down the waxy sebum.

Lymphatic drainage is also very useful to stimulate skins own detoxification processes and particularly effective for congestion located on the jaw line.

We would advise against trying to extract the congestion as it is so deep, it’s not very successful and causes to much pain and trauma on the skin that may lead to scarring.
We hope this article is helpful for you. We are proud to run Beauty Courses in Sydney and Beyond. Please check out our courses page and ask us if you have any further questions.
